Campus and Community

For over 117 years, the College has been West Virginia's leader in engineering education. Through the years, it has evolved into a national and international player offering comprehensive computer science and engineering degrees on the undergraduate and graduate levels. Nearly 2000 undergraduate and 900 graduate motivated and ambitious students call the College home, including more than 500 international students. They are active in professional societies and successful in national and international competitions. They are taught by 107 highly-qualified, dedicated faculty members.

With growing external research funding reaching nearly $23 million last year, the student experience is enriched by our strong research reputation in the areas of energy, power engineering, mining, alternative fuels and engine emissions, software development, environmental restoration, occupational safety and health, biometric systems, and civil infrastructure.

The College is well known for its outstanding senior design experience, with many projects supported by industry. The college has leading programs in many areas such as automotive technology, advanced materials for civil infrastructure, information technology, energy, mining, alternative fuels and engine emissions, power engineering, software development, biometrics, environmental studies and image processing.

The College offers nine BS undergraduate engineering majors and two master’s degrees in Industrial Hygiene and Safety Management that are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology.  We also offer specialized bachelor’s degrees in Biometrics and Computer Science as well as MS and PhD degrees in nine programs.  An off-campus master’s degree in software engineering is also available.

Housed in the Mineral Resources Building, the Engineering Sciences Building and the Engineering Research Building, the College has excellent laboratories, classrooms, and equipment to ensure the best possible education for our students. We are continually investing in revitalization and renewal in the total learning environment of the College. Several major renovations of classes and labs have been recently completed.

Our engineering and computer science graduates lead major universities and businesses such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Hershey Foods Corporation, and Alcoa.

The Morgantown campus lies about 200 miles west of Washington, D.C., the nation’s capitol, and 75 miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the hills and valleys of northern West Virginia. In 2000, Morgantown topped bizjournal.com’s  list of  best small cities in America, and was named the 3^rd Best Small Town in America by Men’s Journal magazine.  Many educational research opportunities exist because of the University’s close-proximity to laboratories of the National Energy Technology Laboratory, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Over 24,000 students study at WVU in an atmosphere that is a refreshing mix of southern and eastern United States cultures, with faculty, staff, and students from around the world.
