It was established in 1909 as the Third District Agricultural School. In 1925, the name was changed to the Agricultural and Mechanical College, Third District. The institute was again renamed to Southern State College in 1951. It received its present name on July 9, 1976. SAU enrolls over 2, 000 undergraduate and postgraduate students every year.
