About Jacksonville & Northeast Florida
Jacksonville
offers JU students distinct advantages. With an area population
of over one million, the city has numerous public parks hosting
organized recreational programs, a major national jazz festival,
a professional symphony orchestra, art museums, a science and
history museum, and a zoo.
In February 2005, the
city will host Super Bowl XXXIX. Thousands of football fans and
volunteers in Jacksonville, anxious to show the world why our
city is so special, are preparing a world-class welcome. To
learn more, visit the Super Bowl Host Committee's Web site at:
www.jacksonvillesuperbowl.com.
The Jacksonville
Landing riverfront festival marketplace and two major shopping
malls are within a short drive of the campus. A major convention
center and center for the performing arts offer programs
year-round, while riverfront reclamation projects have created
popular riverwalks on both the north and south banks of the St.
Johns River.
For sports
enthusiasts, the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars play home games just
across the river from the JU campus. Other spectator sports
opportunities include minor league baseball, basketball and ice
hockey as well as a professional soccer franchise. The Players
Championship, a premier event on the PGA tour, the Bausch and
Lomb women’s Tennis Association tournament and Association of
Tennis Professionals (ATP) events are held nearby. The World
Golf Hall of Fame is less than a half-hour from campus.
Northeast Florida is
steeped in history. St. Augustine, founded by Spanish explorers
in the 1500's, is the nation’s oldest city and is 40 miles south
of Jacksonville. Near the campus is Fort Caroline, an ill-fated
French Huguenot settlement on the St. Johns River.
For weekends and
holidays, Walt Disney World, Seaworld and Universal Studios,
located near Orlando, are only a two-and-a-half hour drive away.
Space shuttle launches and landings at NASA’s Kennedy Space
Center are two hours away. And for those who simply want to
enjoy Florida’s surf and sand, Atlantic Ocean beaches are less
than 20 minutes away from the JU campus.
