It was originally founded as Michigan State Normal School in 1849 and became Michigan State Normal College in 1899. It was renamed Eastern Michigan University in 1959. EMU's site comprises an academic and athletic campus that is spread across 800 acres. There are more than 120 buildings in the campus. EMU consist of five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health and Human Services, Technology and a Graduate School. Eastern Michigan University athletic teams are nicknamed the Eagles.
