It was founded in 1873 by leaders of the Free Methodist Church as the Spring Arbor Seminary. SAU offers undergraduate, graduate, adult profession, and SAU online programs in more than 40 subjects including business administration, communication, Counselling, organizational management, and spiritual foundation and leadership. SAU fields more than 12 intercollegiate sports teams that compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). The teams are nicknamed the Cougars. SAU is a member of the Mid Central College Conference. The campus newspaper is known as "the Crusader.
