Hamline University was founded in 1854 as the first university in Minnesota. The university was named after a bishop of the Methodist Church, Leonidas Lent Hamline. HU's main campus is spread across an area of more than 40 acres in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Hamline University grants bachelors, doctorate and masters degrees. It is made up of:

Hamline University is a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Its sports teams are known as the Pipers. The university is also known as the “birthplace of intercollegiate basketball. " The first intercollegiate basketball game was hosted on February 9, 1895 in the basement of the old science building in Hamline University.
