Montana Tech of the University of Montana, often called Montana Tech, is a public, coeducational university located in Butte, Montana, United States. It was founded as a mining school in 1893. Montana Tech was formerly named as Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology. Later it was renamed as Montana State School of Mines, and then as Montana School of Mines. Finally, in 1994, it was affiliated with the University of Montana and was given its present name. The institution offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various educational fields, including liberal arts, social sciences, occupational training, engineering, industrial hygiene, etc. The campus spreads across an area of nearly 100, 000 acres.

Montana Tech is organized into the following schools and colleges:

  • College of Letters, Sciences and Professional Studies
  • College of Technology
  • Graduate School
  • School of Mines and Engineering
The athletics teams of Montana Tech are nicknamed Orediggers. Charlie Oredigger is the official mascot of the university. The students of Montana Tech participate in intercollegiate basketball, golf, volleyball and football.

Montana Tech Selectivity

Admission to the school is not automatic; not everyone who applies gets in. Three quarters of students in 2007 had SAT verbal scores of at least 470. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 500 and 600.

Faculty

The school maintains a faculty/student ratio (full-time) which is better than most colleges. Montana Tech has a tenure system for senior faculty.

Montana Tech offers dorm rooms to a higher percentage of its students than do most colleges. The school values student athletics, and belongs to the Frontier Conference. Montana Tech offers athletic financial aid to more of its students than do most colleges.
