It was founded in 1932 by Harry A. B. Shapiro and Gertrude Crockett Shapiro under the name New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science. In 1961, it was renamed to New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce. It was chartered in 1963 under the state of New Hampshire. In 1969, it was renamed again to New Hampshire College. On July 1, 2001, it was granted University status, and the name was changed to Southern New Hampshire University. The University now grants admission to more than 2, 000 students every year.
