Situated on the East Coast of
the United States, Stony Brook University is easily accessible from
JFK International Airport. The campus rests on 1,100 wooded acres
on the North Shore of
Long Island in New York State. Close to
the historic village of
Stony Brook and at the geographic midpoint of Long Island, the
University campus lies about 60 miles east of New York City s theatres
and museums and 60 miles west of Montauk Point. It is only a short
distance to the beaches at Fire Island, the elegant resorts of the
Hamptons, and the vineyards of the East End. The internationally
recognized research facilities of
Brookhaven National Laboratory and
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory are nearby.
Stony Brook offers more than 150
majors and minors and combined degree programs for
undergraduates, a thriving research
environment, and a dynamic first-year experience for all freshmen in one
of six small undergraduate communities, which provide faculty mentors,
special advising, freshman seminars, career guidance, and tutorial
assistance.
Guaranteed campus housing for
all four years, 27 residence halls and 23 apartment-style
buildings house more than 9,500 residents (8,400 undergraduates; 1,100
graduate students). All residence halls and apartments offer wireless
Internet access and all rooms have high-speed Internet and cable TV. All
freshmen are guaranteed campus house for four years. Students enjoy
outstanding recreational facilities that
include a new stadium, modern student activities center, and indoor
sports complex. In addition, the Staller Center for the Arts offers
spectacular theatrical and musical performances throughout the year.

COSTS
Undergrduate tuition for international students is U.S. $12,870 per
year; for New York State residents it is U.S. $4,970.
ADMISSION CRITERIA
Stony Brook is a
highly selective institution, seeking to enroll those students who
demonstrate the intellectual curiosity and academic ability to succeed.
Applicants are evaluated on an individual basis. There is no automatic
cutoff in the admission process, either in grade point average, rank, or
test scores. The Admissions Committee seeks to enroll the strongest and
most diverse class possible.
International undergraduate applicants are required
to demonstrate proficiency in English with a minimum composite score of
80 (internet-based), 213 (computer-based) or 550 (paper-based) on the
TOEFL examination, or a minimum SAT I Critical Reading score of 430 or a
minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS examination. Satisfactory completion
of
Stony Brook University s Intensive English Center advanced level
class or completion of a college-level writing course at a U.S. college
or university is accepted in place of a TOEFL, IELTS, or SAT Critical
Reading score.
APPLICATION DEADLINES:
Early completion of the
application is crucial. For the fall semester the deadline
for completed international applications is March 1;for the spring
semester, it is October 1.
The deadline for applications is December 1, and December 31 for the
supplemental application and all other supporting documentation, for
fall semester freshman applicants who wishto be considered for
merit scholarships, the Honors College, WISE, and the Honors Program in
Computer Science. To receive consideration, Stony Brook s
Online Freshman Supplemental Application must also be completed no
later than January 15.
