Initially founded as a normal school, the institute became the Northwestern State Teachers College in 1919, and the Northwestern State College in 1939. It was finally on the 16th of August, 1974, that the institute was named the Northwestern Oklahoma State University. It is a public institution and is located in Alva, Oklahoma. Apart from the main campus, the institution has two satellite campuses located in Woodward and Enid.
