The sports teams of the university are nicknamed the Beavers. Oregon State University has basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, soccer, softball, track, and volleyball teams. Linus Pauling, 1962 Nobel Peace Prize recipient; William Oefelein, NASA astronaut; Cecil D. andrus, former Governor of Idaho; John Ensign, former U. S. Representative of Nevada; and Douglas McKay, former Governor of Oregon are among the famous alumni of the university.
