Study at Brown University

Founded in 1764 as the College of Rhode Island, Brown University is the third oldest institution of higher education in New England and seventh oldest in the U. S. It is a highly esteemed private university located in Providence, Rhode Island and is a member of the Ivy League. The campus of Brown has 238 buildings and covers 143 acres in Providence, the capital of Rhode Island.

Brown is comprised of three schools, offering more than 90 programs of study. Each year it enrolls more than 5, 000 students in the Undergraduate College, over 1, 500 in the Graduate School and more than 300 in the Medical School. The students represent all 50 states and many foreign countries.

The sports teams of the university are nicknamed the Brown Bears. They participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Ivy League athletic conference.

Brown is found in Providence, RI. Providence is a medium-sized city. The school is a private, not-for-profit institution. Students can earn degrees up to and including the Doctoral degree at Brown.

Course Topics

The school has a greater breadth of degree programs (majors) than most colleges of its size. Brown is known for its programs in mathematics, science, drama and performing arts, fine arts, and liberal arts.

Brown Selectivity

Admission to the school is not automatic; not everyone who applies gets in. Hats off to the 14% of those who apply who get accepted. Three quarters of students in 2007 had SAT verbal scores of at least 660. Half of math SAT scores of accepted students fell between 670 and 770.

Faculty

Brown maintains a faculty/student ratio (full-time) which is better than most colleges. The school has a tenure system for senior faculty. The full-time faculty at Brown is well-paid, which often goes with faculty quality.

Student Life

Full-time students are the norm at Brown. The school has a residential or campus feel. Brown offers dorm rooms to a higher percentage of its students than do most colleges. The school values student athletics, and belongs to the Ivy Group.
