United States Universities, Colleges and Schools Claflin University, which was founded in 1869, is the oldest historically black college or university in South Carolina.

US New and World Report
in the 2003 edition of America's Best Colleges ranks the University in the 'top five' among comprehensive colleges and one of the 'Best Values' in the South. The John Templeton Foundation also includes the institution in its honor roll of character building colleges and cites its Freshman College as an exemplary program. A small university offering a big  educational experience, Claflin has long been recognized for the rich legacy of its graduates in medicine, law, teaching, theology and many other professions. Committed to maintaining the very highest standards of academic excellence, the University offers a diversity of programs, which are geared towards meeting societal need in the new millennium.

Currently, the University enrolls 1600 students who major in one of the 32 areas that are offered. It also has dual degree programs with Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina and South Carolina State University. In addition, it has a reputed graduate program, the Master of Business Administration. The faculty student ratio is 14: 1 with over 70% of them holding the terminal degree in their disciplines. Claflin is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097: Telephone number 404-679-4501) to award the bachelor's degree. Its education program is accredited by the National Association for the accreditation of Teacher Education Programs (NCATE) and the South Carolina Board of Education. The University's business program is also accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Claflin University is located 40 miles from Columbia in Orangeburg, South Carolina on a 38-acre campus. It is currently headed by Dr. Henry N. Tisdale, the institution's eighth president.
