About the Brookdale Center on Aging of Hunter College The Brookdale Center on Aging of Hunter College is the largest university-based gerontology center in the New York , New Jersey and Connecticut tri-state area, and the Northeast. World renowned for over 30 years, The Brookdale Center on Aging is one of Hunter College's many academic enrichment programs. Located at Hunter College's Brookdale Health-Science Campus in New York City, The Center's multidisciplinary team of social workers, nurses, lawyers, educators and ethicists provides training and technical assistance to staff at all levels within the aging network. Additionally, the Center helps non-aging agencies and businesses with their concerns for older clients, older workers or caregiver employees and grandparent caregivers. To promote careers in aging, the Brookdale Center on Aging works closely with secondary schools, colleges and professional schools using training and technical assistance projects at the national, state and local level. With academic rigor, The Center addresses issues and problems relating to aging in the United States and instructs those seeking careers in the field. However, the Center is more than a think tank and more than a training ground for careers in gerontology. From its inception in 1974, the Brookdale Center on Aging has tested theories and approaches by translating them into programs which the Center operates and supervises. This unique blend of theory and practice has made the Brookdale Center on Aging one of the largest gerontology centers in the United States; many of its programs have been replicated throughout the country. For more than 30 years, the Brookdale Center on Aging has developed an extensive network of cooperative relationships with organizations and individuals who care for the elderly; hospital administrators, health care works, staffs of public and private agencies, university faculties, social workers, city, state and federal officials, attorneys, family caregivers, and more. Through training, research, service and advocacy programs for and with this network, we help the elderly live dignified and independent lives with proper care, needed social services, adequate income, and opportunities for continued personal growth. The Center's twofold mission of academic training and practical applications is supported only in part by Hunter College. The Center depends for its success on private contributions and grants from foundations and governments.
