Study at Cumberland University

The main campus of Cumberland is in Lebanon, TN (a rural site not far from an urban area). The school is a private, not-for-profit school. Cumberland offers degrees up to the Master's degree.

Course Topics

The school offers more choices of majors than most colleges its size. Cumberland students most commonly major in a field related to education and teaching, family and social work, and nursing and emergency medicine.

Cumberland Selectivity

The school does not accept everyone who applies. In 2007, SAT verbal scores of half of students were 420 to 510. Three-fourths of students accepted in 2007 had SAT math scores of 410 or more. Students attending the school come from a variety of places, in and out of state.

Student Enrolment

In 2007, Cumberland had 1, 335 enrolled students.

Student Life
The school makes available a lot of student housing. Meal plans are available. Student athletes at the school belong to the Mid-South Conference and TranSouth Athletic Conference for major sports. Cumberland takes athletics seriously enough to offer athletic financial aid to a significant portion of its students.

The school reports its educational mission is:

"The mission of Cumberland University is to create a learning community of distinction through a partnership among its students, faculty, staff and the larger community. The development of the whole student -- intellectual, spiritual, psycho-social, physical, creative -- is emphasized in preparation for successful and responsible personal living, for productive economic participation, and for constructive citizenship. Learning opportunities are offered in the liberal arts, selected pre-professional, professional, graduate programs, and Continuing Education programs. Students are facilitated to develop a pattern of lifelong learning by learning to learn and by developing critical thinking, reasoning, and communication abilities. Commitment is made to developing personal and social responsibility through an exploration of an ethical/moral basis. "
