The University of Texas at Austin, also referred to as the University of Texas, UT Austin, UT, or Texas, is a major research university located in Austin, Texas. It was founded in 1883. It is the flagship institution of The University of Texas System. The main campus is spread across an area of 350 acres. The university has ranked 12th among public schools (U. S. News and World Report, 2008) and 19th nationally (The Washington Monthly, 2007). UT Austin offers more than 100 undergraduate and over 150 graduate degrees. The university's athletic programs were recognized by Sports Illustrated as "America's Best Sports College" in 2002. It ranked fifth in the nation among Division I schools according to the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Their sports teams are known as Texas Longhorns.
