It was established in 1971 as Tyler State College. UT Tyler's main campus is spread across an area of 200 acres. The university offers more than 90 academic degree programs at the bachelors, masters and doctoral levels. It is organized into the following academic divisions:
UT Tyler participates in the American Southwest Conference of the NCAA's Division III. Both men's and women's sports teams are sponsored by the school and are nicknamed the Patriots.
