Study at New England Culinary Institute


New England Culinary Institute (NECI) is a private, co-educational school which provides the training and real life experience necessary to thrive in the fast-paced food and beverage industry. Founded in 1980, the school's two campuses are located in Montpelier and Essex Junction, Vermont. The Institute provides each of its students with one or more 6-month paid internships at some of the finest restaurants, resorts and corporations in the world. All students in the Culinary Arts program begin their first year at the Montpelier campus before moving on to the scenic Inn at Essex for their second year. The Associates Degree in Hospitality and Restaurant Management is offered on the Essex campus only, whereas the Associates Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts is offered on the Montpelier campus only. The Certificate Program in Basic Cooking is offered in Essex, but the Pastry and the Baking Certificates are offered in Montpelier only. New England Culinary Institute AdmissionsThe NECI admissions process is simple. An application, which includes a required essay, can be completed online or downloaded. An online Learning Assessment should also be completed, and high school transcripts should be forwarded to the Institute. Once the applicant's completed application is received, it will be reviewed and the applicant will be contacted within two weeks by an admissions representative. New England Culinary Institute Faculty QualityNECI has a faculty of eighty-four who have impressive educational credentials and broad based experience in the food and beverage industry. The faculty includes top industry professionals, each of whom has or has had a distinguished career outside the New England Culinary Institute and is a recognized expert in his/her field. Students are learning from professionals who have first-hand inside knowledge of the industry and who teach not only theory but the practical reality of how things really work. NECI has more than 500 full-time students. Approximately 76% of them are between the ages of 18 and 25; 22% are between 26 and 39; and 2% are 40 or older. New England Culinary Institute Student LifeIn Montpelier, dorm rooms are available on-campus in two buildings, as well as in other houses and apartments within the community. These include renovated duplexes, triplexes, apartment and residence halls located within a one-and-a-half-mile radius of the school. In Essex, living quarters are designed as apartments housing three to six students; each student has a private room. All housing units have a common/living area with local phone service and a bathroom that students share. Most are also equipped with a kitchen. The majority of dorms are wired for cable and Internet and there are coin laundry facilities on-site. Units are fully furnished, with a typical room containing one twin bed and mattress, a dresser, a desk, a chair and blinds. Students are expected to provide their own non-halogen lamps, portable bookshelves, bedding, drapes, dishes, cookware, ironing boards and iron.
