The British School of Washington (BSW) is an international, co-educational college preparatory independent day school of over 400 students from 3-19 years (UK Nursery to Year 13/US Pre-School to Grade 12) owned and operated by the World Class Learning Group (WCL). Other WCL schools in the USA are in New York, Houston, Boston, Chicago and Charlotte as well as in Canada and Spain.

BSW serves the members of the American, British, and international communities in Washington, DC and the metropolitan area who are seeking a high quality British based education taught in English with a global perspective. There are 230 students in the Primary School and 220 in the Secondary School of whom 51 are enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)

The school benefits from a strong House system. Students and staff belong to one of four Houses which engenders a whole school community ethos.

The school occupies outstanding facilities close to the campus of Georgetown University including use of the adjacent first-class Jelleff Sports Centre. The school offers transportation for students living within an hour’s travel from the campus.

The average class size for all Secondary School courses is 14 and 16 for Primary classes. This allows for significant personal attention. The school is able to support those with moderate special learning needs. For Years 10-13, prospective students must demonstrate advanced proficiency in English.

The majority of the staff are British and trained in the United Kingdom. They mainly hold UK first and higher degrees as well as government recognized teaching qualifications. The school’s curriculum is based on British and international programs. The various courses reflect a global perspective and the international outlook of the student body.

BSW offers a wide range of curriculum enrichment activities for all students including an active House system of competitive activities, interschool sports, music tuition and choirs, as well as a number of clubs and activities for younger students.

The school is a member of the European Council of International Schools, the Council of International Schools, the Council of British International Schools in the European Communities, the International Baccalaureate Organization, and is accredited as a Learning Focused School by Fieldwork Education services, UK.
