The university is the flagship institution of the University of Wisconsin System. UW-Madison became a land-grant institution in 1866. The campus is spread across an area of over 900 acres. University of Wisconsin-Madison offers a wide variety of degrees and programs through its associated schools and colleges. The Washington Monthly 2007 rankings placed UW-Madison at the 18th position among all national universities. UW-Madison's sports teams are nicknamed the Badgers. Their official mascot is Bucky Badger. The university participates in the NCAA's Division I-A.
